House of the Binns

General Tam Dalziel or Dalyell (known as 'Bluidy Tam') of the Binns is said to walk the house and grounds; it is also reputed that his phantom rides a white horse. He led a colourful life, escaping from the Tower of London after being taken prisoner at the Battle of Worcester and lived in exile after the Royalist cause faltered, and he served with the Tsar's cossacks for three years, where he is said to have roasted prisoners alive and then introduced thumbscrews to Scotland. A legend is that he sometimes played cards with the Devil - and on at least one occasion, he won!
