St George's Field

Once a meadow that flooded regularly, the ghost of Baron Stafford has been seen here. He was challenged to a duel and lost, being run through with a sword - the fight is still re-enacted apparently with only Stafford being seen. The second ghost is that of a highwayman. He has been identified as Dick Turpin who was hanged in this city in the 18th century. However, it could be another highwayman called John Nevison, who was also hanged in the city and who the actual basis for the story that he rode 230 miles in one day to acquire an alibi for holding up a stagecoach.
