The Black Bull Inn

The spectre of William Dutton walks here; during the Civil War, he was a member of the Royalist army but became enamoured with the serving wenchm Elizabeth Fry. One Thomas Boves had "an arrangement" with the girl and killed Dutton in the area that is now the restaurant. The ghost is reputed to have saved a young girl when she slipped down the stairs; she was caught and placed upright at the bottom. Other than this, there is a variety of poltergeist-like activity, including hiding things and locking a staff member in the cellar. A manager even claimed that something crawled up the side of the bed next to him; he is said to have "politely" told the ghost to move over and give him some room! Unfortunately it is not known if the ghost complied or not!
