Speke Hall

A "Grey Lady" (sometimes described as being white!) has rarely been seen here; according to a well-known but probably apocryphal tale, she is said to be Lady Mary Beauclark, whose mind snapped when her husband gambled everything away. In a state of despair, she threw their baby out of the window into the moat where it perished. Mary is said to have killed herself soon afterwards. She is now said to walk the hall in remorse and has been said to appear at the window through which she disposed of her child. Stories abound that a phantom priest and a gardener from Victorian times also haunt this building. Cold spots, a cradle that rocks by itself, footsteps and the sound of children crying have been reported too.
