St Giles Church

When the Black Death struck the village of Holme in 1666, Nan Scott decided to segregate herself from her neighbours and sought isolation in the church. When her supplies of food ran low, she emerged to find no one alive remaining in the village. She shut herself into the church and waited for death - which came from starvation. Her body was found weeks later by villagers who had fled but returned when the plague had burnt itself out. Her ghost has since been seen in the churchyard and her footsteps heard in the tiny chamber in the church roof in which she hid.
