St Lawrence's Church

The cries of moans of children have been heard in the fields surrounding the church. In the 19th century, the Old Mill (since demolished) had a large workforce of orphaned boys that the owner obtained by bribing workhouse proprietors. The records in the workhouses were written to sound as if the children had died or been adopted. Therefore, the Old Mill had a huge workforce and when children died, they were buried in pauper's graves at the church or dumped in shallow graves on the mill's property, their locations unknown to this day. Eventually, the millowner's misdeeds were uncovered and he was sent to prison.
