St Wystan Church

The church is the haunt of many ghosts, including a fanciful tale of a goblin who hides in the spire and emerges when the moon is full to grant a wish to anyone who sees it. In the crypt, the ghost of St Wystan has been reported, as has the spirit of a hooded, monk-like figure, a ghost who hums and a smoky figure, which has also been seen in the churchyard, where a 17th century gravedigger has also been seen. James Wheldon, who repented of the murder of Samuel Marsall in 1786 is said to be seen here placing flowers on a grave. Ghosts have been observed from a nearby school walking among the graves before vanishing.
