Woodcroft Castle

The sounds of fighting and pleas for mercy have been heard here. During the Civil War period, the owner of this building, Dr Michael Hudson tried to form a group to prevent Cromwell's parliamentarian forces from approaching the area but they found out and were besieged at Woodcroft. Hudson was cornered on the roof but the Roundheads displayed no mercy and cut his fingers off as he hung on for life. He fell into the moat and survived but was sliced to pieces by the pikes of Cromwell's men as he tried to reach the bank (the men who murdered him are said to return as spectres). The sounds of Hudson's final screaming moments are also to be heard and sometimes, particularly on the anniversary of his death (June 6th), his figure emerges from the moat, with no hands. A phantom nun is also said to have been seen in the castle.
