Hinchingbrooke House

An apparition, believed to be a monk, has been sighted here. Another spectral resident, a "White Lady" walks the grounds or in the nearby road (a sighting of her in the 1940s was preceded by a scream). During renovation work in the 1960/70s, workmen who left their tools in the house overnight returned to work to find them moved from room to room! It is during this incident that a man who stayed overnight in the Reception Room encountered the monk - he refused to set foot in the room ever again. Older stories mention a phantom dog, a cavalier in the room in which he was killed, a phantom woman who floats above the staircase, nuns "both on and off the school grounds" and the sounds of whispering, footsteps and children playing.
