Blacklow Hill

Piers Gaveston, the 1st Earl of Cornwall was executed by the Earl of Cornwall here. Gaveston was hated by many and was a favourite of the unpopular King Edward II. When his castle was besieged he agreed to surrender on the condition he was given safe passage to London but the Earl of Conrwall intervened took charge and had his executed on the hill. The procession to the execution spot is still said to be seen, and the jingling of bells heard (these were placed on the horse dragging Gaveston to his fate).
