Corpus Christi College

Dr Henry Butts, a former master of the College is said to haunt his former rooms and the nearby staircase; he became depressed at the toll the plague in 1630 had on his students and colleagues and latterly, by his peers failing to appreciate him and he hung himself. Bangings and thumpings have also been blamed on Butts, and his phantom is said to display a "gruesome gash around his neck" where his garters cut in. There are also reports of a disembodied head (or perhaps the upper half of a body?) The other ghost is a young man who hid in a cupboard in the kitchen when the master, Dr Spencer, flew into a range when he found out his daughter was pregnant. Tragically, the young man became trapped and suffocated.
