High Down House

It is said that on the 15th of June, a headless Cavalier named Goring rides to Hitchin Priory; he was wounded during the Civil War and sought refuge in High Down, where he had a lady friend. As the Parliamentarian forces approached, he escaped using a secret underground passage and hid in the hollow of an old tree. However, he was discovered and was decapitated. His phantom is said to descend from the tree and run down the avenue clutching his detached head before riding a white horse to Hitchin Priory. However, there are many dubious facets of this story!
