The Old Palace

The surviving wing is all that remains of the original Royal palace after it was destroyed by the Dowager Marchioness of Salisbury in 1835 when she had an accident with a candle; she perished in the conflagration and her ghost has returned to her home after death. In addition, a corridor in the old portion of the house exhibits the sound of footsteps, a door opening then invisible feet walking down the stairs. A female form has also been seen passing through the gateway (allegedly on moonlit nights), passing along Fore Street and then entering St Ethelreda's Church. Elizabeth I lived at the palace as a child and it is said that her spirit returns here, too.
