St Nicholas Church

Two female ghosts haunt the churchyard - one wears a bonnet inside which no face can be seen (this phantom is only seen on moonless nights, it is claimed) and walks through the western gate towards the River Crouch (she has also been seen inside the church too), the other wears a blue gown. Yet another female spectre lacks a head and is dressed in silk, riding in a sledge down the hill from the church to the river (this might be the "bonnet" phantom above?) Another ghost has also been seen in the driveway of the rectory. A legend says that if you walk around the church seven times on Halloween, a witch will be summoned; whereas walking around the church anti-clockwise will bring the Devil himself forth!
