The Kings Arms and Royal Hotel

Peter the Great, Tsar of All the Russias visited this building in 1698 where he indulged in a gargantuan feast washed down with copious amounts of alcohol; the resulting bill nearly gave the landlord a nervous breakdown but King William III provided recompense. Footsteps, laughter, knocking and banging and the figure of a man "in strange clothes" in a bedroom have been attributed to the party, and poltergeist-like activity of objects being moved has also been reported. One story says that in one bedroom "in the small hours", the sound of heavy boots being pulled off and dropped can be heard.
