Cowdray House Ruins

The wife of the 5th Viscount Montague is reported to be seen here; she shot a priest dead for starting mass without her husband, who spent the remainder of his life in hiding in a priest hole. She is seen walking towards Cowdray from Midhurst. Between the ruin and the new Cowdray House is a path called Lady's Walk after the ghost who meanders along it. She is said to be the widow of Sir Anthony Browne who lived in the house and evicted all the monks from Battle Abbey during the Dissolution. He was cursed by one of the monks that his line would come to an end by fire and water, which eventually came to pass when his building burnt down and one of his descendants drowned. There are also said to be the sound of children's voices in the gatehouse.
