Lavender Cottage

Former resident Sir Hubert de Hurst is said to haunt this cottage; in the 15th century Sir William de Lindfield dug a tunnel from the castle to the cottage so that he could meet Hubert's wife. However, Hubert found out and blocked "his" end of the tunnel and when William tried to reach his lover and was thwarted, he found the castle end being bricked up too. Hubert's wife killed herself and he was so distraught he went mad and hanged himself. The two lovers are said to haunt the garden, where the tunnel emerged.
