Ilchester ArmsA spectral gatekeeper has been seen standing near the fireplace, jangling coins; he is nicknamed "Charles". A ghostly child (or maybe two?) haunts the upper floors, tripping up guests. The upper half of a Victorian lady has been seen in the ladies toilets, and a hairy dog walks through the bar and conservatory and peers through the windows. A man dress in a black cape and hood has also been observed in the kitchen, where a spectral monk, who likes to tug at clothing, is said to "reside". The most commonly reported phantom seems to date from the English Civil War; he is said to be a Cavalier with "a wide brimmed hat" and was hanged in the two by Cromwell's forces. Link: Dorset Echo |
