In 1912, Canute Chambers was the location of the White Star Line's offices. Following news of the disaster, frantic relatives congregated at the building seeking news of their loved ones. Survivors names were placed on boards outside the offices; often misspelt, the names gave or extinguished hope to those awaiting news.
