The Long Stairs

In the 16th century, a man named Henry Hardwick was walking in the area when he and some others were accosted by press gangs. They fought back against the gang but Hardwick was chased to the top of the stairs where he was caught. His eyes were gouged out and he was thrown down the stairs. His apparition, with a bloodied face and empty slots where his eyes should be, has been seen staggering down the stairs. Another version (or perhaps another ghost?) is that a sailor was assaulted and them nailed to the side door of the old Cooperage pub.
