Nevile's Cross Battlefield

In 1346, Scottish and English forces met here, after the invaders had plundered the north of England and were marching east towards Durham. Thanks mainly to English archers perched on the hills, the Scottish forces were destroyed, with the death tally being some 20,000 men. It is said that battle is replayed in spectral form, albeit silently, while some claim that the roar of the men in battle can still be heard.
