Egglestone Abbey

Legend says that a servant girl was thrown into the Tees by her lover, Brother Martin from the Abbey after he was advised to put her from his mind. She is seen to rise from the waters of the river opposite the ruins screaming her pain and agony. In some versions of the story, Martin also drowned himself in the river and his figure has been seen moving around the Abbey ruins. On occasion, the two ex-lovers can sometimes be seen when the river is in flood.
