Kirkstall Abbey

The ghost of an old abbott has been observed pacing around the gatehouse of the Abbey. A lady named Mary is also said to haunt the grounds; she disturbed her lover who had just robbed and killed a local squire. Although her lover, Richard evaded her, he dropped his hat and this identified him to the authorities - and he was hanged. Mary's mind became unhinged and she would wander the Abbey grounds where Richard had performed his dreadful deed. Her parents died of broken hearts and during one vigil between her mother's grave and the Abbey, Mary froze to death. She has been seen in the grounds, and screams attributed to her have been heard.
