Bessie Sheppard's Stone

An engraved stone marks the approximate location where 17 year old servant Bessie Sheppard's body was found after she failed to return home in 1817. A scissor grinder named Charles Rotherham soon after tried to sell Bessie's possessions and he was soon hanged. The stone was moved when the A60 was widened in the 1960s, and from time to time, a girl matching Bessie's description has been seen. She is carrying an umbrella and seems upset but when drivers stop for her, she walks off in the direction of the woods and vanishes.
