The Arches

The Arches are the remains of a 12th century church; these features were removed and placed on top of a hill as a folly. According to legend, spectral laughter has been heard here. The story is that the devil was so incensed at the God-fearing ways of the locals that he resolved to destroy the church, but the village cobbler misdirected him and he left the area. The local townsfolk were so worried that he might return that they tore down the church and lived less than pious lives. The laughter is said to be that of the cobbler, delighted that he fooled the devil himself!
