St Mary Magdalene Church

The north eastern corner of the churchyard is the spectral domain of William Phelps, who engaged in a fist fight against Owen Swift in 1838. Phelps collapsed from exhaustion and was conveyed to his room at the Wheatsheaf pub (now a private residence in the High Street). He died of a brain haemorrhage three days later, and was buried in the churchyard where his spirit is said to issue moaning and sighing noises. It is also said that he haunted the Wheatsheaf but it is not known if he still manifests since its change of function.
