King's Head Hotel

A ghostly monk has been seen in this hotel, once the site of an old monastery; on one occasion he was seen siting on a barstool and then vanished, knocking over the stool as he did so. He has also been seen in the cellar and undercroft. A staff member was so scared at seeing the phantom that she resigned from her job. Another ghost is said to be Lord Lovelace, who was attacked and died here after locals heard him voicing his support for King James in the hotel (James' Catholic sympathies in a Protestant country had caused much dissent). The spectral Cavalier observed here is thought to be Bulstrode Whitelock who was shot and later died in a room in the hotel, which is named after him. One employee looked up from working in the room to see the ghost pointing a gun at his head! Another spectre, reported to have been the phantom of a man who was tortured by the Romans is thought to be responsible for wailing noises. Footsteps, objects being flung around and a fireball that vanished when it hit a mirror have also been experienced here too.
