Roundway Down

Im 1643, two opposing sides in the Civil War were poised to fight, but the Royalists had to fall back to Devizes as they were short of ammunition and food, despite having a slightly larger force than the Parliamentarians. The Roundhead force were keen to advance on their bedraggled foes until Royalist reinforcements arrived, which succeeded in defeating the forces of Parliament and was instrumental in them losing their seat of power in the West Country. The ghosts of those who fell have been seen here; 300 yards from the battlefield is a precipice and many fled the scene fell and were killed here. This area is replete with spectral soldiers, either encountered visibly or audibly by the sounds of horses hooves and screaming men. Cannonfire and musketry has also been recorded too.
