Peter Labelliere's Monument

A cold breeze is said to forewarn visitors of the imminent arrival of Peter Labelliere, who is said to mutter, "For Christ's sake, save us and the whole race of mankind..." In life, he was a renowned eccentric and took to hiking up Box Hill; it was during one of these visits that he tripped and a piece of metal pierced his eye. Before perishing of his wound, he asked to be buried on the hill - upside down. Legend says that he insisted on this because he thought the world would be deemed to be topsy-turvy on Judgement Day and that only he would be the correct way up!
