Abbots Hospital

The Duke of Monmouth was imprisoner here prior to being executed for treason, after he had tried to use his status (he was the illegitimate son of Charles II) and his catholicism to force his claims. He was banished from England but after the King's death, he returned to try and take charge of the Kingdom - and was defeated and arrested. He was temporarily held at the Abbots Hospital before being taken to the Tower of London where it took five blows to sever his head. His ghost has been seen at the hospital, where he has a "sorrowful gaze."
