Shute Pillars

In the 18th century, Shute House was owned by Sir John Pole; one of his daughters fell in love with his coachman but Pole did not approve and sacked his employee and forbade his daughter from seeing him. However, a few weeks later Pole found them kissing behind one of the pillars, whereupon he took his riding whip and beat the former coachman to death. Since this, his ghost has been seen, acting as if he is trying to evade the lashing he received.
